How to Enjoy Guilt-Free Pizza

I love pizza just as much as the next person, but two regular slices of pizza have about 550 calories and 20 g of fat and that's before you add toppings or make it deep dish: OUCH! That's a lot more time spent in the gym that I care to be in and doing!

But, here are a few new ways to get a more healthful slice of the all-American pie:

Uno Chicago Grill's Roasted Eggplant, Spinach, and Feta Flatbread Pizza

I love it because: At 220 calories per serving, it's a satisfying and smart choice—300-plus calories lighter than a serving of the deceptively healthful-sounding Farmer's Market Vegetable Pizza.  Bonus: At the chain's Nutrition Information Center kiosks, you can look up calories and other vital stats for each item on the menu.

Pizza Fusion's Organic Mushroom and Thyme

I love it because: Every pie, salad, and breadstick at this growing franchise chain (now in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, New Jersey, Ohio) is made with all-natural and organic ingredients, which means that they have more disease-fighting power than your average parlor picks (plus, mushrooms are packed with antioxidants). The stores are built with Earth-friendly materials like countertops made from 100% recycled detergent bottles; the delivery cars are all gas-saving hybrids.

Amy's No Cheese Roasted Vegetable Pizza (in grocery stores)

I love it because: It makes a perfect dinner-in-a-pinch if you're lactose intolerant or just avoiding dairy. Sensitive to gluten? Stay in the frozen foods aisle to find wheat-free crusts and pizzas like the award-winning thin-crust cheese pizza from Foods by George.

Do-It-Yourself Dough (at grocery stores such as Wegmans, Trader Joe's, and Whole Foods)

I love it because: You get to pile the pie high with nutrient-packed ingredients. Find ready-made whole wheat pizza dough in the refrigerated section of the supermarket. Twirl and toss it until thin, and then top with tomato sauce, lots of veggies (spinach, mushrooms, onions), a lean protein (shrimp, tofu) and a sprinkling of a flavorful cheese (Romano). Bake per package directions.

There's a restaurant here in downtown Plano, Texas "The Urban Crust" that serves a very healthy pizza.  Let me know who and where your favorite healthy pizza place is so I can share it with my readers.  Be sure and include their web site.
