Examples of Core Training

Building core stability can be a lot of fun with exercises that add variety to your standard routine.  Whichever core exercises you choose, aim to do them three times a week, or every other day.

Essentially any exercise that uses the trunk of your body without support is a core exercise.  For example, a push-up stresses your core more than does a bench press, during which the bench is supporting your trunk.  As a result, nearly any exercise can be modified to increase your core activity and strengthen core muscles.

It's a good idea to get some certified personal trainer's (CPT) instruction as you begin a core training program because pinpointing your core muscles takes some practice.  Taking a class with a CPT can help you make sure you're using the correct muscles.  In addition, a number of DVDs are available to help you learn the various exercises for your core muscles.
