The Healthy Herb: Basil
Basil is rich in antioxidants that mop up cell-damaging free radicals inside the body. This can help prevent a host of unwanted conditions, such as osteoporosis, arthritis, and high cholesterol. Basil also contains oils that prevent bacteria growth and inflammation.
In the Kitchen: Make fresh pesto by blending 2 cups fresh basil leaves with 2 tablespoons pine nuts, ¼ cup Parmesan, and ¼ cup olive oil. Some folks like to flavor their iced tea and/or lemonade with basil leaves instead of mint leaves. Also, some people like to make a "green" smoothie with basil and spinach. Use whatever juice you might have, banana, orange, lime, yogurt and ice. You may consider adding basil leaves to grilled sandwiches and on any pasta dish.
